This continuing education course equips master's-level social workers with clinical and relational approaches to support women and female-identifying clients as they navigate the complex process of making authentic decisions about motherhood. Participants will build a deeper understanding of the societal expectations and prejudice that shape this decision — both the choice to become a mother and the choice not to — with a focus on client autonomy, self-compassion, and resilience. The session covers strategies for facilitating reflective exploration, managing internalized stigma, and providing client-centered advocacy.

Learning Objectives — by the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify societal and internalized pressures that shape women's and female-identifying clients' decisions about motherhood.
• Apply strategies for facilitating reflective, values-aligned exploration of reproductive decisions.
• Describe techniques for managing internalized stigma and building client self-compassion and resilience.
• Employ advocacy-oriented approaches that support client autonomy throughout the decision-making process.

Presenter Bio

Kathleen Lakey is an LCSW in private practice in downtown Salt Lake City. She has worked as a social worker since 2010 with a variety of populations, and her current clinical focus is in EMDR and trauma-focused relational work.
