Every interaction creates an experience. This interactive workshop gives social workers a practical framework for strengthening culturally responsive, equitable, and inclusive practice by examining how implicit bias, lived experience, assumptions, expectations, communication, and everyday professional behavior shape the experiences of clients, colleagues, and communities. Through guided discussion, reflective activities, and applied practice, participants will move beyond awareness toward intentional professional practice that creates more positive experiences for the people they serve and the colleagues with whom they work.

Learning Objectives — by the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify how implicit bias, assumptions, and lived experience shape professional interactions with clients and colleagues.
• Analyze the role of communication and everyday professional behavior in creating client and workplace experiences.
• Develop intentional behavioral strategies that strengthen respectful, inclusive, and culturally responsive practice.
• Apply practical tools to improve client engagement and positively influence organizational culture.

Registration note: This session requires a short pre-workshop reflection (approx. 100–150 words) as a condition of CEU credit. Responses aren't graded — they're used to support in-session discussion. Registrants should receive the reflection prompt with their confirmation.

Presenter Bio

Dr. David Parker, EdD, is an educator, social worker, author, and organizational consultant with more than 30 years of experience helping individuals and organizations strengthen communication, professional relationships, and organizational culture. He is Past President of NASW–Utah Chapter, Chair of the Utah Board of Juvenile Justice, an adjunct faculty member at the University of Utah, co-host of Dialogue Docs on KRCL Public Radio, author of the 32-book The BEST Me I Can Be! series, and developer of the Awareness to Action framework.

DrDave Derezotes is Professor Emeritus, College of Social Work, University of Utah, and retired Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program (Humanities College, University of Utah). He volunteers and leads dialogues at his local senior center, teaches for the Osher Program, provides LCSW consultation groups and program trainings, writes for local newspapers, and sees clients in his private practice.
