What is intimacy? How can social workers help couples build intimacy in their relationships? In this 90-minute session, participants will learn the basic types of intimacy — physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual — and how they relate to one another, along with the common barriers to intimacy in romantic relationships. Presenters will offer approaches social workers can use to help couples reduce those barriers and build stronger intimacy across all five domains.
Learning Objectives — by the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the five basic types of intimacy and how they relate to one another.
- Identify common barriers to intimacy in romantic relationships.
- Apply clinical approaches to help couples reduce barriers to intimacy.
- Employ methods for helping clients build intimacy across physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual domains.
Presenter Bio
Maria Skedros, LCSW, CST is a psychotherapist and AASECT-certified sex therapist at Deep Roots Psychotherapy, where her clinical practice focuses on sexual health and sexual concerns. She is also an Associate Professor at the University of Utah's College of Social Work, teaching core mental health therapy skills in the Master of Social Work program.
DrDave Derezotes is Professor Emeritus, College of Social Work, University of Utah, and retired Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program (Humanities College, University of Utah). He volunteers and leads dialogues at his local senior center, teaches for the Osher Program, provides LCSW consultation groups and program trainings, writes for local newspapers, and sees clients in his private practice.
