Political polarization has become an inescapable part of many clients' lives — but what belongs in the therapy room, and what does not? This thought-provoking presentation explores how today's social and political climate can shape the mental health experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals, while challenging clinicians to distinguish between realistic fear, minority stress, trauma, and psychopathology. Through case examples, clinical discussion, and practical interventions, participants will examine how to provide affirming, ethically grounded care without allowing politics to overshadow the therapeutic relationship.

Presenter Bio

Jerry Buie, MSW, LCSW, has been a clinical social worker for more than three decades and is the founder of Pride Counseling in Salt Lake City, one of Utah's longest-standing LGBTQIA+ affirming mental health practices. A former Associate Professor at the University of Utah College of Social Work, Jerry has dedicated his career to advancing culturally responsive, evidence-informed care for LGBTQIA+ individuals, couples, and families, with leadership across community organizations, advocacy efforts, professional training, and consultation on affirmative clinical practice.
